General Information

Origin: Unknown

Chrono Trigger

The Dream Species is the title given to unique creatures whose compositions are only explained as "dreams." The first of this kind were Masa, Mune, and Doreen; the first two were supposedly created when Melchior fashioned the Masamune sword. All three have the ability to teleport and levitate at will, and even take on different forms. They are all individual, conscious beings, though philosophy-minded Doreen is more mature than the easy-going Masa & Mune. It is totally unknown how or why they exist; whether Melchior somehow imbued these magical creatures with life, or whether dreams in the Chrono series can take living form is unknown. They may be akin to Shikigami, spirits summoned by astrologers to do menial work in Japanese astrology. Masa, Mune, and Doreen may also be analogous to the Japanese belief in a trifecta of power, will, and wisdom. These three concepts form the Triforce in the Legend of Zelda series and pop up in other cultural places as well. In the Japanese original version of Chrono Trigger, a Zeal woman provided one possible explanation:

 [Young Woman]
Born of dreams, returning to dreams...…
Beings such as that exist as well.

At times, human prayers and desires borrow
the power of Lavos-sama and materialize.

The Shades of Chrono Trigger DS may also be born of dreams.

Chrono Cross

Turnip is explained as being the dream of a sleeping dragoon in Viper Manor, and seems to be a living dream creature as well. Turnip explains when he confronts the Frozen Flame that because he thinks, he exists. The fortune teller in Termina also states that in addition to having a mysterious birth, a fascinating event awaits him. This event could be whatever happens when the sleeping Dragoon in Viper Manor wakes up. Lastly, the Lagoonates of Marbule are stated to be the nightmare of the Black Dragon.
