The Dimensional Vortex is a rip in the fabric of space-time that appears in three eras: 12000 B.C., 1000 A.D., and 2300 A.D. A temporally unstable zone, the dimensional vortex features several fragmentary locales, possibly lost pieces of other timelines or histories. Entering the vortex takes one to the Planar Interstice, a short hallway with a teleporter pad at the end. Much of the vortex exists of random areas—eight per vortex entry, so 24 overall. In between the areas are Nameless Caves providing rest and safety, including a final Nameless Cave called the Twilight Grotto. The zones also include one dungeon per each vortex entry, yielding much treasure. The end of the vortex holds a boss fight with a shade (whether Lucca's Crimson Shade, Marle's Alabaster Shade, or Crono's Steel Shade). Defeat takes the party back to the normal timeline.
