The Middle Ages of Chrono Trigger are a vision of castles, knights, squires, and magic-wielding Mystics waging war on mankind. The Kingdom of Guardia protects humans in the war, consisting of four towns, a Cathedral, and countless knights who pledge fealty to King Guardia XXI. An order of protectors called Knights of the Square Table resides in the castle and is led by the gold armor-wearing Knight Captain, whose brother is a renowned Chef. In 590 A.D., a great warrior named Cyrus led the order. On a mission to retrieve the legendary Masamune sword, Cyrus fell to Magus, leader of the Mystic armies. Magus changed Cyrus's squire Glenn into an anthropomorphic frog. Glenn brooded over the loss of his friend and buried Cyrus in Choras before taking up arms to defend Guardia in an unofficial capacity. The war machine of the Kingdom is charged with protecting Truce, Dorino, and Porre on the mainland; Dorino solicited the help of an adventurer named Toma to acquire special armor.

Magus's Lair and Ozzie's Fort, central headquarters of the Mystic army, reside on a nearby continent. For reasons and motives unknown, the Mystics openly declared war on the human race around 590 A.D. and later invaded southern Zenan, the furthest extent of their front reaching Zenan Bridge. Crono and his heroes come to this era to find Marle, mistaken for Queen Leene. Crono discovers that the Cathedral to the west was taken over by Yakra in a bid to kidnap Queen Leene and disrupt Guardia. With Frog's help, Crono and Lucca rescue the real Queen Leene and Chancellor and return to 1000 A.D. with Marle. Frog returned to his burrow in the Cursed Woods, wracked with guilt over not being able to stop Yakra from kidnapping Leene in the first place. In Crono's next visit, he took Jerky to the troops at Zenan Bridge and held off Ozzie's northward offensive. Crono also ascended the Denadoro Mts to find a piece of the Masamune and convinced Frog to lend him the other piece to restore the sword. Crono's party next struck Magus's Lair with Frog's help, culminating with Magus's partial summoning of Lavos, which threw the party to 65000000 B.C. and Magus to 12000 B.C. Before Crono intervened, Magus would have summoned Lavos properly, resulting in his death. In either case, the Mystic army ceased to function without his leadership and the war ended.

Crono next visited the Middle Ages to retrieve the Rainbow Shell from deep within the surfaced Giant's Claw. The treasure hunter Toma had located it but was unable to fight the monsters within the caverns. The party learned that Fiona's Forest had been desertified in 1000 A.D. due to the presence of vicious, subterranean monsters in the Middle Ages. The party defeated Retinite and the other monsters, and Robo labored for the next 400 years to rebuild the forest, leading to the creation of Fiona's Shrine in the present age.

was left in the shrine since prehistory.
-The party hear about the Nu Guardian, now a Nu Master. They can't reach him
because of a downed ladder on Mount Emerald.
-A Reptite makes a new ladder, and the party travels with it to prehistory.
-The party return and climb the mountain.
-The party defeat the Nu Master and befriend him.
-A Reptite wants to build a Great Bridge to a distant tower at Mount Emerald.
-The party agree to help, and find a Steel Ingot in the Winding Passage.
-The party depart to prehistory to find more materials.
-The party return and collect a reward for the bridge materials.
-The party return to prehistory.
-The party return and find the Saintstone has become a Waystone.
-The party departs for prehistory.
-The party return and save the bridge builder from falling.
